DnB Entertainment had a chance to sit down with Mr.Sprocket for an exclusive interview and lets just say... The Future looks amazing.

DNB: I’m here with DJ OG Sprocket. We’re here live at Meduse. How’s it going man, how you doing today?
OGS: Pretty Good. Pretty Good.

  • DNB: Pretty good. Alright that’s good to know. Uh. So to start things off tell me a little bit about yourself. Tell me a little bit about DJ OG Sprocket.

OGS: Ummm. Let’s see. 24 uh born and raised Austin, TX. Like music I think. (laughs) let’s see. Creative spontaneous, like to stay in shape sometimes.

  • DNB: (laughs) Good to know. Good to hear. Good to hear. So uh I’ve actually known you for a while. And um, you know, I, I guess we can say as growing up you’ve always been kind of like the music guy to go to. You’ve always kind of had that that thing, I mean, had a few parties where you unofficially Dj’d.

DNB: So I guess what I should say is: at what point was, uh, I guess was the tipping point for you to become a DJ?

OGS: Umm. Let’s see. It was about uhhh a little over a year and a half ago, I was like, I was uh.. I was just using my laptop and my mouse and I didn’t take it seriously really. And at first I started on iTunes and me Djing would be putting one song next in the play list.

DNB: Yeah

OGS: But I just made the decision to get on some hardware. I went to the you know the nearest DJ rental place and just picked something out. And , there you go.

  • DNB: I feel you. So, how many uh rental places are in Austin anyways? I mean how long did that take you to—

OGS: Honestly. Well, Rock N Roll rentals is probably the most well known one, uh, I think there is another one but it’s not as popular as Rock N Roll rentals. So, I mean um, it’s in South Austin. If you’re anywhere in south Austin you can get there like that (Snaps)

  • DNB: That’s gonna be the best spot. So, um, I still actually listen to your spracket racket mix and I have to say that I love it, obviously but, um my question is when you’re making a mix do you, is it all through inspiration or do you have a technique that you go into when you’re blending them all together.

OGS: Well, honestly, and I mean, tch, like I, with that mix I took two shots of Hera Dera before I started that.

DNB: Nice

OGS: Um And that kind of got me in the zone. Otherwise I’m like really nervous because with I mean I don’t know how other DJs do it, when I mix like I like to, it’s like one fluid song. It has to be, like if I’m thirty minutes in and the mix is 45 minutes long and I mess up, I have to start all over. And so like to be in the zone and to have my mind creatively thinking and working along with staying on tempo and, you know, operating the hardware effectively, I kind of have to be able to be a little tipsy Maybe.

DNB: I gotcha, I gotcha. So it’s a little bit of both though

OGS: A little bit of both.

  • DNB: Okay. So all of Austin is super stoked for SXSW 2013. What about you? What’s your schedule like? I mean, I know you can’t go into it too big probably but

OGS: Um, as far as the music portion, um, I’m still pretty free. But I will be DJing 4-5 days you know in the SXSW interactive so like I guess it’s more like the corporate side, internet business, stuff like that

DNB: Cool deal.

OGS: Um but you know that’s it for now. Hopefully some more stuff will come up.

  • DNB: Yeah, yeah. We still have a few weeks to go before SXSW hits. So I know your starting residency was Madison in 2011, and currently your uh residency is here in Meduse where actually this interview is going on now. Um, It seems like you got a pretty nice spot here and a pretty nice set up going on. Um. In the near future do you have any big plans, any big dreams that you’re looking toward or ?

OGS: Well, I mean the biggest the tallest building is being built right next door. And so I’m really looking forward to that. Um This place has a lot of potential and it’s really nice. Um and once that building is up, like that, I mean that’s business on top of business.

DNB: Yeah, definitely.

OGS: It’s exposure. Um but, I mean I’m planning on taking as many residencies as I can, and I have, along with this one I have two more Thursdays at Haven um and then Saturdays at the Elixir Lounge at Ten Oak.

  • DNB: Ten oak? Cool deal, cool deal. Um, let’s see so in terms of DJs, just DJs, whose your biggest inspiration? Who kind of helped you get started with your DJ? Do you have a mentor?

OGS: Um, honestly my biggest inspiration is a guy named uh DJ Blitz.

DNB: Mike Fernandez. Cool deal.

OGS: Mike Fernandez. Um, but, I mean, the guy doesn’t like anybody. (DNB and OG Laugh)

DNB: That’s true.

OGS: (laughing) He definitely, for some odd reason he liked me, and then he’s, I mean, it’s a competitive career and someone like him who is all day Dj, DJ, DJ, DJ, that’s all he does, DJ. For someone like that to take you know take me in and teach me any and everything he knows. I mean that’s , he’s- he’s

DNB: Yeah. Definitely a big blessing, yeah.

OGS: He’s just an inspiration and my mentor, my go-to guy for questions and anything like that. Any time I watch him spin, like people will see me and if-if you see me I’ll be in the booth but I’ll be seriously just starting at his CDJs and watching his hands and watching how he does, you know, what not, so I can learn how to do that. But, I mean, yeah. He’s- he’s definitely number one on the list.

  • DNB: Cool deal. So, as a DJ so far, it can be you can, your party, uh, it can be a uh funny moment, whatever, but what’s your most memorable moment DJing so far? Just the, the thing that sticks in your head the most?

OGS: My most memorable moment? Let’s see, um , man there’s a lot. I’d have to say, I’d have to say, this past New Year’s eve I uh, I uh I DJ’d at Lucky Lounge over on 5th street. And man, it was just insane.

DNB: Just the energy?

OGS: Yeah, I mean I even had, I had some people from school drive 9 hours, like four or five of them, drive nine hours to come AND bought a ticket. And I had two more drive 3 hours and bought tickets. And the tickets were $75 bucks. You drive nine hours, you drive even more than 30 minutes and you pay 75 bucks, you know, that’s, I mean that’s support. So that alone and just the energy from the crowd, I mean it was amazing.

  • DNB: You’ve definitely got some good support it looks like, for sure. I’ve definitely noticed how fast, like between you making your online appearance, I’ve definitely noticed how fast your fan base kind of just like snapped into place (snaps). I mean like I said I’ve known you for a while and I’m sure, I mean you have a ton of friends, so you’ve kind of always had that kind of music support, but it’s definitely come up real fast. In between 2013 and 2014 of next year what do you hope to accomplish the most, like what’s your biggest goal for this year?

OGS: Oh man. Um my biggest goal for this year is to dive head first into production.

DNB: Into production. So to eventually make your own mixes.

OGS: Make my own, like my own mixes compiled of my own beats.

OGS: The trap scene is really starting to take off. And it’s not that I that’s why I want to make that kind of music the most, it’s just that that’s the kind of music that I see makes the crowd hype.

DNB: That’s the next big thing.

OGS: I mean all day long I’m going through my head with beats in my head of you know this remix or that remix and what not. I mean that’s basic Trap. But I mean I want to make everything and anything.

  • DNB: Everything. Yeah. Well that’s, that’s the best part about DJs like you. I mean the more versatile you are in now-a-days modern society, the further you’re gonna go cause those one people that only stick with one thing, they could be, you know, heart felt on it but it’s not gonna do them any good at the end of the day because when that falls off they have nothing left.

OGS: True

  • DNB: Um so what’s the biggest event you hope to DJ one day?

OGS: The biggest event I’d hope to Dj is probably like EDC, UME, um, Nocturnal, um any of those, any of those big festivals man. Yeah I mean that’d be amazing. Just to, you know, spin along side someone that I look up to like Tiesto.

  • DNB: Yeah, definitely I’m getting goose bumps just thinking about it. Before we before we close is there anything you would like to say to the viewers, anything you would like to tell them to check out, any shout outs you’d like to give.

OGS: Um, let’s see of course, I mean my mom, I mean she’s really my biggest inspiration as far as in general, I mean, strongest woman I know, uh, no matter, no matter what I’m doing she’ll

DNB: She’s got your back

OGS: Yeah.

DNB: That’s good.

OGS: Um, let’s see, uh, all the managers especially the ones here at uh Meduse . I mean, they really really, like they’re loyal to me and that’s one thing I respect the most and so I’m gonna be loyal to them. Uh, let’s see. Uh website coming soon (laughs)

OGS: Um, yeah, go to my facebook page, It’s uh, It’s uh pretty simple. Facebook.com/DJOGSprocket um and also my sound cloud: Soundcloud.com/DGOJSprocket. Uh, Mexico coming soon (laughs again)

  • DNB: Oh yeah, tell us about that. What’s the deal with Mexico?

OGS: Um, let’s see, um, Mexico, I got an, you know, email you know from a guy that had gotten my number from one of the, uh, managers, Jonny, at Lucky Lounge. And he had heard me, the guy had heard me at Lucky Lounge, and I was like, okay, you know yeah, I’ll do, I do weddings, and I told him my rates you know all the you know basic details and whatnot. Um and then the email back from that was Okay, well hey, the- the wedding is in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We’re gonna pay for three nights, you know, all your expenses are paid, um, you have your own room, you’ll be on the resort with us, I mean the wedding is on Sunday and we leave Friday. I mean it was just, I couldn’t even respond back for a day or two.

DNB: Yeah, that sounds amazing. Yeah, that’s- that’s a little overwhelming a little bit right there

OGS: Um, but I mean I’m-I’m excited. That’s, uh, not till the summer but I mean I’m as excited as ever

DNB: This Derek with DnB Entertainment, and this is an Exclusive with DJ OG Sprocket

DNB: Definitely be sure to check him out. He’s definitely someone you’re gonna want to, be watching for.

End.
